The picture of domestic life that Damien and Emery presented was one I aspired to. I first met them in a 1984 photograph that accompanied a New York Times article under the then-shocking headline “Homosexual Couples Find a Quiet Pride.” There they were at home in their library looking like the Pete and Chasten Buttigieg of their day-subversively radical in their “normal-ness.” It was an image that contradicted every popular stereotype of gay men and male couples, and one that I found to be hopeful.
